More than $6,500 worth of crack cocaine was seized at a traffic stop near Wausau, Wisconsin. A search of the driver’s home revealed another 65 grams of crack and $3,000 in cash. It’s a surprising amount of crack to find unexpectedly – especially in rural Wisconsin – and many local residents may not have realized that the problem of crack abuse in the area was that large. Typically, people believe that the only users of crack cocaine are down and out in large cities, often homeless and/or criminals, desperate people without families or responsibilities.
The fact is, however, that crack is becoming a far more common drug of abuse. Rural and suburban communities are more and more deeply affected by abuse of the drug.
Obstacles to Crack Addiction Treatment
It’s not always easy to help those living with an active addiction to recognize that they need intensive treatment or that now is the time to pursue getting help if they do understand that their use of drugs and alcohol is causing them harm. Those dependent on crack often find it difficult to make the transition into treatment for a number of reasons, including:
- Shame. For many, admitting that crack cocaine is their drug of choice is difficult for people who feel that they don’t fit the stereotype of a crack addict.
- Deep addiction. Many who use crack cocaine are deep into their addiction and find it difficult to visualize a life not defined by drug use.
- Fear. It can also be difficult for addicts to take on the hard work and the unknown factors that come with recovery, opting instead to maintain the status quo even if it means continuing to experience the negative consequences that characterize addiction.
