The idea of living life devoid of the illusionary relief, comfort and confidence drugs and alcohol provide can seem daunting.

For some active addicts, the concept may present itself as impossible. Conversely, living a drug-free life is one of the most incredible, rich experiences one can choose to attain. Sustaining sobriety takes time, patience and hard work on behalf of the addict. Overcoming an addiction requires individuals to adapt from the fast life of mind-altering substances — and reaching for extrinsic solutions to intrinsic issues — into a sober, “emotionally present” lifestyle.

The finest place to experience this lifestyle transition is within the confines of a sober living facility.

Sober living homes exist throughout the United States as venues to provide a safe, secure, drug-free environment – a place where addicts and alcoholics can thrive during their early stages of recovery.

When Is the Best Time to Check in?

Sober living homes offer ideal living quarters for individuals who have just been discharged from a rehabilitation center. The safe, cocoon-like lifestyle experienced in a rehab center is very different from an addict’s daily life in the real world. By staying in a sober living home, the individual is exposed to many of the real factors that influence their daily decisions, while maintaining a secure environment free of daunting temptations. The fragile state addicts in early sobriety often find themselves in makes it imperative for them to be around others who understand the struggles and obstacles associated with early sobriety.

Community living within a sober living home fosters:

  • Long-lasting personal connections to be sustained far beyond the scope of the sober living stint.
  • Mutual support among housemates.
  • Both staff and peer encouragement in maintaining 12-step meeting participation.
  • Resources in the event of an emergency or unfavorable situation.
  • Guidelines that addicts must follow, helping them to stay accountable for their actions. At home, addicts can slip back into self-destructive patterns such as isolating, ignoring phone calls and spending time with acquaintances who are potentially damaging to one’s sobriety.

What One Should Understand Before Taking the Plunge

Paying for and staying at a sober living home are decisions of great magnitude. Before making the decision to stay at a particular sober living home, addicts and their families must conduct thorough research on all their options. Research should entail amenities offered, guidelines of the sober living home, personnel requirements and testing policies. By understanding the expectations of the sober living rehab home, addicts will be better inclined to thrive in the environment once they check in.

What should one expect while at a sober living facility?

Although facilities differ in amenities offered, there are structural similarities that align all sober living facilities, such as:

  • Upholding rules and guidelines. All patients are required to check in and out of the sober living facility, complete assigned chores and follow sober living home guidelines. Failure to do so can result in the termination of the contractual agreement set forth in the entry period
  • Keeping drugs and alcohol away from the premises. If patients sneak mind-altering substances onto the premises, the individual will most likely be removed from the sober living grounds as a result. Without enforcing these rules, sober living home managers create risks for clients who are following the rules, and compromise the security of sober living homes.
  • Giving patients drug and alcohol screenings on a regular basis. Failure to comply can result in termination or the implementation of punitive measures. Sober living homes test for drug use to ensure all patients are exhibiting integrity, i.e., aligning their verbal claims with their actual actions. Although some clients may claim to be sober, if a drug test reflects otherwise, the sober living home managers will note the discrepancy and take appropriate action against the infraction.

How Much Does it Cost?

These facilities would charge a premium over the sober living home with resident assistants who come and go with the intention of simply overseeing patient behavior with little regularity.

The sober living drug rehab costs vary. Costs are inclusive of the community in which the facility resides, amenities offered, personnel requirements and the breadth of resources available on the premises. For instance, some sober living homes employ therapists 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The therapists rotate shifts, ensuring that at least one therapist is on-site at all times.
