Monroe County’s drug court system has been helping Bloomington, Indiana residents get treatment rather than endure incarceration for more than a decade. Thanks to the new system, people who are without violent offenses – many of them first-time offenders – can get the drug addiction treatment they need to make sure they don’t end up in the court room again.

What Do Drug Courts Offer?
All nonviolent offenders charged with a drug-related crime have the option of going through drug court if their crimes were perpetrated with the goal of maintaining an ongoing drug dependence. In most cases, if it is clear that there was no violence and that the offender is not dealing drugs, then they will be offered the option of drug treatment. They will be expected to:
- Meet all requirements of the mandated drug rehab program
- Remain clean and sober
- Meet with a probation officer regularly
- Maintain all court commitments
In time, many offenders may even earn the right to expunge their record – that is, all charges will be dropped and they will never have to go to jail and won’t have a criminal record. However, should they fail to meet the requirements, they will have to do the time for the original crime plus for any others committed during the probationary period.
