In addition to being the largest, most populous state in the country, California is also home to one of the most significant drug addiction and alcoholism problems in the United States.

Throughout cities large and small in the state, California alcohol and drug rehabilitation centers report a growing demand for their services each year and there’s no sign of slowing down.

The Problems Facing Alcohol and Drug Rehabs in California

Individuals with alcohol or drug addictions can be found in the biggest cities or the small rural communities.

Substance abuse and addiction can strike anyone of any socio-economic background. That being said, the largest urban centers in California, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego and Sacramento are also home to the most significant drug and alcohol problems.

This fact occurs for two major reasons: one, there are simply more people in these cities that anywhere else in California and therefore will have more alcoholic and drug addicts. The second reason is that major urban centers such as Los Angeles and San Francisco are home to major players in the worldwide drug trade. Studies have shown that a proximity to drug sources such as this lower the price and increase the availability of drugs, which in turn explains the higher levels of addiction in the area.

Most Prevalent Drug Addictions in California

Drug use in California is as varied as the people who live in the state. According to State of California officials, the most commonly used drugs in the state of California are (listed in alphabetic order):

  • Alcohol
  • Cocaine
  • Crystal Meth
  • Ecstasy
  • Heroin
  • Marijuana
  • OxyContin
  • Vicodin

Where is Alcohol and Drug Addiction Treatment Available in California?

Again, wherever there are people in need, there will likely be a California alcohol and drug rehab center. Many of California’s alcohol and drug treatment centers are located in big cities where the problems are the most severe. Others however, can be found in highly remote areas, overlooking the most beautiful scenery in the state. These are usually high-end, luxury rehab centers and can be found in Malibu, Palm Springs, Mill Valley, Los Angeles and other wealthy communities. Many individuals prefer these scenic locales for their alcohol or drug rehab because they are far from home, and the absence of distractions and temptations help the individual focus more on their recovery.

What is Unique about California Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers?

California has always been known as a place for progressive addiction treatment styles. And the rehab programs throughout the state reflect that fact. For every “traditional” drug treatment facility in California, an individual is likely to encounter two more that have success working with alternative treatment styles such as holistic medicine, acupuncture and other methods that fall outside of the medical mainstream.
