State College Alcohol and Drug Rehab Listings
When a man reportedly attempted to pay his cab fare with marijuana in State College, Pennsylvania, the cabbie notified police. It’s one of many questionable decisions made by those under the influence of marijuana – a decision that could potentially lead to a loss of freedom and a host of other consequences.
One of the unique things about marijuana use and abuse is that, unlike many other street drugs, its users are of all ages. The young are not the only ones who experiment with the drug. In fact, one of the most quickly growing populations who regularly indulge in use of marijuana includes those over the age of 50.
Drug Use After 50
Marijuana use may not be as uncommon among the over-50 set as many people might think. An article in the New York Times, “Shuffleboard? Oh, Maybe Let’s Get High Instead,” recently investigated the use of the drug by seniors. The author found many people in their 60s and 70s who were open about their marijuana use. Many could be described as former hippies who had used the drug in their youth and either returned to its use or never quit. The article notes the following:
- The National Survey on Drug Use and Health found 6.3 percent of adults in their 50s had used the drug in 2011. In 2002, only 2.7 percent of persons in that age bracket had used it.
- A pro-marijuana group of seniors called Grannies for Grass has been formed in some states.
- Some seniors are also into using marijuana in cooking. A website operated by Moms for Marijuana International is used to exchange recipes.
