Prescription drugs can be a godsend to those dealing with chronic or acute pain, helping them to feel better and be more functional when they otherwise would not be. However, for some, a prescription that was meant to help can turn into a nightmare, creating an addiction that can take years to fight and conquer.

If you would like to find out how you can help your family member in Salt Lake City, Utah, call us today to learn more about drug rehab options.

Prescription Drug Dependence Is Causing Problems in Utah

In 2000, about 50 people in Utah lost their lives to prescription drug overdose by taking a legitimate prescription. By 2007, that number rose to almost 300, according to the Utah Department of Human Services. It’s a problem that has everyone alarmed – law enforcement, government officials, medical professionals and patients alike.

The number of residents in Utah over the age of 12 who abuse painkillers non-medically (without a prescription or not as prescribed) has been higher than the national estimates since 2004. In fact, more people die due to an overdose on prescribed medications than due to an illicit drug overdose on street drugs like heroin

Another startling statistic is that unintended drug overdose deaths in Utah (either using a legitimate prescription or using the drug non-medically) rose from 167 in 1999 to 448 in 2007. Most of these deaths were caused by opiate painkillers.

Also, emergency room admissions due to opiate painkillers in Utah almost tripled from 1999 to 2005, rising from 297 to 802.
