Richland Alcohol and Drug Rehab Listings
A two-year-long study conducted by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, WA, used high-tech methods to develop new ways to predict and test for drug abuse. Commissioned by the U.S. Department of Defense, the study brought together individuals in the field of biotech and military personnel for the joint project. Focusing on the body’s response to hydrocodone, a powerful prescription painkiller, the research will benefit the military as well as civilians.
Treating the Abuse of Opioids
Opioid painkillers, such as hydrocodone, are powerful substances that can benefit those individuals with chronic pain and serious health problems. They are also powerfully addictive drugs when they are not used as prescribed. Individuals who abuse these medications may not understand their destructive power and usually need assistance breaking the habit of opioid abuse. In most cases, a combination of the following treatments and therapies is used to help opiate users to break free from drug dependence:
- Detoxification. As the individual is deprived of these substances, the body goes through withdrawal. The medically managed process of withdrawal is called detoxification (detox).
- Medications. The detox process is sometimes managed through the use of medications, such as methadone, that help ease withdrawal symptoms and decrease drug cravings.
- Counseling and/or support groups. Different methods of therapy and group support are frequently used in conjunction with medications to help the individual break old habits, develop new positive habits and receive the ongoing support they need.
