Several drug overdoses in May 2013 have local police in north central Virginia very concerned. Within a week, several individuals suffered fatal heroin overdoses, including one in Charlottesville, VA, who died after being transported to the University of Virginia Medical Center. Several others died, while at least one was revived by paramedics. A local police chief called this rash of overdoses a serious health issue. Detectives have been working hard to find out the source of the drugs to hopefully crack down on the supply network and prevent further heroin-related deaths.

Children of Substance Abusers

The effects of drug or alcohol abuse are never limited to the substance abuser. When children are involved, the effects of their behaviors are even more pronounced. Children rarely understand the situation and don’t know how to react to an adult who is abusing drugs or alcohol. Apart from helping the adult find treatment, there also are a number of things to tell a child who is dealing with their parent or guardian’s substance abuse:

  • Their parent or guardian’s behavior is not the child’s fault, and they are not to blame.
  • Other kids have gone through similar experiences in their own families, and they are not alone.
  • Talking about how they feel and what they are going through is a good idea. They don’t have to keep quiet about their experiences.
  • They don’t have to make the same bad choices that their parent or guardian has made.
