North Carolina Is Fighting a Rise in Prescription Drug Abuse
Of all illicit substances, prescription medications are responsible for the most overdoses in North Carolina, according to law enforcement. In 2011, North Carolina lost more than 1,000 residents to prescription drug overdose, a number that Attorney General Roy Cooper says surpasses overdoses caused by all other drugs combined.
And it’s not just overdoses that are a problem because of prescription drug abuse. Donnie Varnell is the head of the State Bureau of Investigation’s Diversion and Environmental Crimes Unit and he says that the number of cases related to prescription drugs has increased by 400 percent over the last five years.
What’s the solution? There are a number of measures that may help to make a difference in the number of people who develop problems with prescription drugs. For their part, law enforcement and government officials will require patients to show a photo ID when they pick up a narcotic medication.
On a personal level, those who are already living with a prescription drug dependence or abusing prescription painkillers will have to be proactive in helping themselves before they fall victim to an overdose or an accident caused by living under the influence. How will you help yourself or your loved one heal?
