When Motley Crue appeared on CNN’s Piers Morgan Tonight, the band talked about everything, including the specifics of the heroin addictions that plagued more than one member and a few eclectic choices in terms of ingestion of other substances as well. Currently, all members of the band are clean and sober – though Vince Neil continues to drink from time to time – and they’re still making music and performing. In fact, they’re scheduled to take residence at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas as of February of next year.
Nikki Sixx famously talked about his heroin addiction in The Heroin Diaries but he talked about it again on the show. He said he first started using the drug for no deeper reason than it was just there to be had, and that: “We wanted to experience everything and I have a very addictive personality and those things don’t go together well. I had to get away from it. All that stuff makes you who you are today.”
It took more than one trip to heroin rehab for Sixx to kick the habit – and more than a few overdoses along the way, as well. Always in the spotlight, he regularly made headlines as he vacillated back and forth between active addiction and sobriety – an issue all the band members had to deal with as they struggled with their own addictions.
Like every rock band, Motley Crue has their fair share of stories about some of the things they’ve tried via drug and alcohol abuse. The story shared by the band on the show was an experiment with the injection of whiskey.
Said Nikki Sixx: “We thought it was a good idea. I went to sleep quickly. It only happened once.”
Tommy Lee ventured that it was a useless endeavor. He said: “There was really no reason to inject it.”
For Nikki Sixx, he said it just happened for him one day after a number of attempts to get clean: A “light just went on and it was over. I never picked up again. It was hard. I had to go through withdrawal. I knew I didn’t want this. I loved my band. I didn’t have any family back then. I didn’t want to throw it away.”
